Climbing on the Via Ferrata

The iron paths are sporting itineraries running round rocky walls and they have artefacts to help you on your way: steps, pins, clamps, handrails, chains, bridges, etc. Your safety is guaranteed on the route thanks to a steel cable. The iron pathways do not require as much physical preparation as climbing and the material and techniques used are simpler. Nevertheless, we would advise you to seek help from a professional to prevent any accidents. You should have insurance covering your own risks and those of any third party. It is recommended that you join a mountaineering association and follow a training course if you do not intend to hire a professional.

In La Hoya de Huesca we have equipped six iron pathways for you. Enjoy them.

Palomo Canal

It is not permitted to enter the wells on the ascent in this gorge.  It is close to Santa Eulalia la Mayor.

ACCES: From the poplar glade near the Vadiello road you will see the iron pathway immediately.  The return journey starts from the top end of the iron path at the Circo d’O Ciego.

ITINERARY: All along the canal, avoiding the wells, by a succession of jutting rocks down vertical zones and, at some points, athletic passes.  It ends in the Circo d' O Ciego..

San Miguel Crag Iron Pathway

In Santa Eulalia de la Peña.

ACCESS: On the road leading to the Cienfuens Dam, to the parking area prepared for the ascent to the San Miguel Crag.

ITINERARY: Leave from the parking area passing under the end tower of the San Miguel Crag, going southwards.  The pathway gets narrower until a cable is needed to protect walkers.  It veers round to reach the hill separating the San Miguel Crag from the other Synclines.

From there you have two possibilities::

     - Another that continues until you come to the normal path on the Crag.

Amán Crag Iron Pathway

Amán Crag Iron Pathway

ACCESS: From Nueno or Huesca on the road that goes up to the Cienfuens Dam to the San Miguel Crag parking area.

ITINERARY: From the parking you leave on foot going towards the Gorge and there you continue the ascent towards the Crag.  You return on the same path.

Ruaba Crag Iron Pathway

Near Murillo de Gállego

ACCESS: From Murillo you will have access to the southern and western iron paths.  Take the turn-off towards Agüero and keep on this road for two kilometres, where you turn off to the right.  Continue on the earth track for a kilometre and a half.  Then turn off to the right.  After crossing the gorge, a few metres on, leave your car.  From there, there are 20 minutes on foot on a sign-boarded path which will take you to the wall.

ITINERARY: Once at the foot of the Ruaba Crag, for the southern iron path, take a path off to the right sign-boarded with red and yellow triangles as far as the first section of chains. For the western iron pathway, the access is more complicated. You turn off to the left passing under the big ceiling of the Calva Cave and reaching the slope on the other side of the gorge. Cross over the Varella Portillo pass on the lower part and, with the spur and crest gap in view, walk towards a large stone quarry until you come to the first clamps and chains.
